Study topic 2

Regulatory signs

Recognise signs that control, command, prohibit or reserve road space, and understand what action each one requires.

By the end, you should be able to

  • Distinguish STOP, GIVE WAY and no-entry controls
  • Recognise commands and prohibitions by shape and colour
  • Respond to restrictions before reaching them
01

Orders must be obeyed

Regulatory signs control priority, command an action, prohibit an action or reserve road space. Failure to obey them is an offence. Compare each sign’s shape, colour and symbol in the road-sign guide.

02

Recognise STOP by its eight sides

The red octagonal STOP sign requires a complete stop at every junction where it appears. Continue only after checking that the road is clear.

Zambian Highway Code · Rule 218; sign R1, printed page 76
03

GIVE WAY means prepare to stop

GIVE WAY has an inverted triangular shape. Slow down and be ready to stop so traffic on the major road can pass. If you are unsure, give way.

04

Read a speed limit as a maximum

A red-bordered circular sign showing 60 means a maximum of 60 km/h. Road, traffic or weather conditions can require a lower speed.

05

No entry closes that direction

A red circle with a white horizontal bar means vehicles must not enter from that direction. Stopping first does not give permission to continue past it.

06

Keep left and proceed left differ

The blue keep-left sign directs you to pass to the left of the sign or obstruction. Proceed left only directs your route to the left at that point. Neither sign gives permission to overtake on the left.

07

Check the restriction and any extra plate

NO OVERTAKING prohibits overtaking; NO PARKING prohibits parking. A supplementary plate may explain the times, distance or vehicle types covered. Read the whole instruction before acting.
