The steps

  1. Learn the Highway Code. Start with the Ten Basic Rules, work through the study topics and the road signs, then use quick practice and the mock test until you are consistently correct. Go to Learn
  2. Get a medical certificate. RTSA lists a medical certificate among the requirements for a provisional licence.
  3. Apply for a provisional licence at an RTSA station. Check RTSA’s current eligibility and document requirements before you go.
  4. Sit the theory test. The provisional licence is issued after the theory test. This is the test the questions on this site help you practise for.
  5. Practise driving on your provisional licence, then book the practical driving test. RTSA states the practical test is taken 7 days or more after getting a provisional licence.
  6. Pass the practical test and collect your licence. RTSA charges a printing fee for the licence card.

Fees RTSA publishes

As published on the RTSA Driver Licencing page, read on 6 September 2026. Confirm the current figure at the station or on the RTSA website before you pay.

Preparing for the theory test

  • Read Rule 110, the Ten Basic Rules of Driving. Many questions come back to these rules.
  • Learn the road signs by shape and colour as well as by name. Cover the caption and say the meaning before you reveal it.
  • Use the mock test under time. Thirty questions in thirty minutes is a fair rehearsal for reading each question properly.
  • Review your mistakes on the Progress page. A question you got wrong twice is the one to read up on in the Code.
  • Read the official Highway Code itself for anything this site summarises. It is the source, and the test follows it.

On the day

  • Bring the documents RTSA asks for and any payment receipts. Keep copies.
  • Arrive early. Stations can be busy, and a rushed start makes the test harder than it is.
  • Read every question to the end before choosing. Several answers can look right until the last few words.
  • If you do not pass, ask what the process is for sitting again and keep practising. A fail is not a record against you.
