Study topic 7

Overtaking, lanes & road position

Learn when to hang back, when passing is prohibited, and how to return safely to the left.

By the end, you should be able to

  • Overtake on the correct side
  • Spot places where overtaking is unsafe
  • Give cyclists and oncoming traffic enough room
01

Keep left in normal driving

A dual carriageway has a central divider separating opposite directions of traffic. Where there are two lanes in your direction, normally use the left lane. The right lane is for overtaking or turning right. After overtaking, return left when it is safe, without cutting in.

Zambian Highway Code · Rule 154
02

Normally pass on the right

The limited exception is where the vehicle ahead is signalling right and you can pass safely on the left without obstructing others.

Zambian Highway Code · Rule 164
03

Check the whole manoeuvre

Before overtaking, check the road well ahead and behind, use mirrors and blind-spot checks, and signal. Leave the other vehicle plenty of room and return left only when clear. On a single carriageway, do not follow another vehicle out until it has finished overtaking.

Zambian Highway Code · Rules 160–163 and 176
04

Do not compete

When another vehicle overtakes you, do not accelerate. Slow down if needed to let the manoeuvre finish safely.

Zambian Highway Code · Rule 165
05

Give cyclists room to wobble

Do not pass close to a cyclist. Leave enough room for an unexpected wobble. Rule 168 does not prescribe a single numerical gap.

06

Wait for oncoming traffic at obstructions

On an ordinary two-lane road, give way to oncoming vehicles before moving out around parked vehicles or another obstruction on your side.

Zambian Highway Code · Rule 166
07

Know where overtaking is prohibited

Do not overtake at or approaching pedestrian or railway crossings, junctions, bends, hill brows or hump-back and narrow bridges. Do not overtake where the road narrows, across a solid centre line or where a NO OVERTAKING sign applies.

Zambian Highway Code · Rules 170–171
08

When in doubt, wait

Do not start an overtake if you are unsure it is safe. Keep a safe following distance and wait for a permitted place with enough clear road. Never force another road user to swerve or slow.
